Biggest day for the Women’s Div 2 side so far this season. Coming up to this game against Capilano on the home pitch of Brockton Oval , not many people believed the Rowers would stand a chance against this strong side who have been together for quite some time now. Going into this game Cap was #1 in the standings with a 6-0 record. A record that would scare any team who faced them. This was a different day for the Rowers Ladies. The feeling in the change room before the game was fun but very business like. The girls had been working hard in practice that week and knew what they each had to bring to the table to make this game successful. 10 minutes left in warm up the ladies were told there was going to be a different set up this week with UBCO coming down to play UBC (which had folded) and wanting to play. They were too play shortened games but games they were to play regardless.
The first half the Rowers came out guns a blazing. You would have never guessed these girls had never played this sport before. The first half belonged to the rowers, Scoring 2 out of their 3 tries in the first half (Chloe Cullen, Madison Smith). This was the best hitting game we have ever seen from the Rowers, with girls stepping up and throwing some unreal ones down. Standouts from this game included Mikiela Nelson, Nikki Scott, Chantalle Bracken, and Chloe Cullen. Second half came around and Caps came out furious. Capilano sure came out like they wanted to play, scoring all 3 tries and a few conversions. But Capilano couldn’t stop the Rowers from getting to the line, with tight head prop Chantalle Bracken squeaking past the try line and touching down, followed by kicking the conversion to tie up the game 17-17 with 3 minutes left. The Rowers then held the Capilano’s from scoring, ending the biggest game of the season in a tie. This is an unreal accomplishment for the Lady Rowers , who started the summer with give or take 5 girls officially on the team. These girls have worked their butts off and improved tremendously, and will continue to take their skills to the next level.
What happened next is what rugby culture is all about. The Vancouver Rowing Club ladies side , as well as the Capilano Rugby ladies came together and joined forces to play against the UBCO division 1 side, very much like a barbarians game. The women unified, and set aside their differences to play a fun and very educational game against a higher division. The Rowers-Caps side lost that 30 minute match but Celebrated post game with some beers, games and boat races.
The Rowers were very pleased to host 2 amazing teams and can’t wait for the Ladies to be back!
