VRC 2nd division is on the bus to Abbottsford, ready to face off against Kamloops in the BC Rugby Mainland finals. The 1st Div will follow, squaring off against Bayside later this afternoon in the Div 1 final.
I had trouble sleeping last night. Used the nervous energy to pack my rugby bag and watch the speech from Any Given Sunday a few times, then went and jumped rope for a while. Butterflies are pretty standard ahead of big games, but this was different and I couldn’t really figure out why.
In my 10th year of rugby, I’m over the nerves that come from self doubt. Dwelling on it is a trap. The whistle is going to go and a player who’s thinking about what they’re supposed to be thinking about is going to deliver his best rugby. Overthink it, the mistakes creep in, the doubt snowballs, and you’re on tilt. It wasn’t fear or doubt keeping me up.
This D2 side went through it this year. We came from behind in the 2nd half at home to win our first game. We went undefeated in the first half, had some good luck and bad, won games we should have lost, got screwed by officiating and locked out of the sheds in the snow, and had a sobering couple of losses remind us how hard it was. We did it all through the cast rotations common to a support team, and that was just fine. The more the merrier. The Rowing Club runs deep.
We play for each other. I know it’s a cliche, but it’s true. This club builds each other up. And now we’re on a bus to our last game of the year. A championship final. One last run.
That’s what was keeping me up. Once I put my finger on it, I slept like a baby. We’re all still going to be here after the game, but the book on the 2018 2nd Div is going to be over after today, and I’m sure going to miss it.
But first, we’ve got a game to play.
Let’s go Super 2s!
UPDATE: Rowers 2nds lost in the finals, but the 1st Div are Provincial Champs.

Whatever. The team loses in Any Given Sunday, too.
