The VRC Women’s team kicked off a big home club day for the Rowing Club with a 26-20 home win over arch-rival Capilanos.

Captain Meghan Buchanan scored a try off the opening kickoff, one of two on the day, while veteran front row forward Heymen Wong added one of her own to make it three unanswered tries for a hard-hitting VRC Women’s side. New centre back Rachel Johnson also scored a try in a debut that Coach Stu Holland described as “a blindah.”

Coach Holland was also impressed with the effort from utility forward Cliona Ni Mhaolruaidh, who played second row, prop and even filled in at fullback, “hitting every ruck as she went.”

The Caps mounted an effort in the second half, but couldn’t close the gap.

The win makes the Rowers Women 1-1 on the season. They’re next in action this coming Saturday October 1st against 0-1 Richmond RFC, away at King George Park. Kickoff is at 11 am.
